Oil and Gas Affairs Minister, Dr. Abdul Hussein Mirza stated that Bahrain is soon to be home to hybrid wind and solar energy plants at a cost of BD 3 million. Amorphous Thin Film

Thin film panels  mostly  have a much lower efficiency at 6%, however,Cadmium Telluride Thin-Film panels (CdTe) have progressed to 11% efficiency. These are more suitable for inland Australia conditions where space is no problem  and temperatures are  above average  . Amorphous panels  will never  lose energy in higher heats.
Disadvantages are: expected lifespan is less, there is a 3-6 month breaking in period, and they  generally  require 2-3 times the roof space for the same output of crystalline cells.
When choosing, remember to focus on the goal of recouping your initial costs through savings in electricity . The more efficient and higher Watt panels will do this  much quicker  .  However, if you are  considering looking   at solar farms in Outback Australia where temperatures routinely get above 40 degrees Celsius and there is a bit of cloud cover as these panels work much better in the shade also then these panels may be for you .

How to Use Your Solar Path Lights to Charge Batteries

Are You Ready For When The Electrical Grid Goes Out?

Are you aware that you can charge your “AA” rechargeable batteries with those eerie solar lights glowing beside your driveway? Yes, you can! What does it require? Next to nothing – they have already been designed for charging batteries.

Solar garden or landscape lights generate little real light; however, they do have two quite prominent features:

1. They are inexpensive to buy

2. They do an admirable job as simple solar charging devices for AA size NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) or NiMH (Nickel Metal Halide) rechargeable batteries.

As of this moment, Amazon.com offers Moonrays 91225 Solar Powered Plastic Path Lights in a package of 10 for roughly $30. I haven’t used this particular model but most are about the same.

These outdoor solar lights normally are powered by one or more replaceable “AA” sized NiCad batteries – which naturally means it will also charge them.

For $30 I get a charger for at least ten “AA” batteries. Not too bad.

These solar patio lights may be more cosmetic than functional; but if your regular battery charger is missing or broken, they might bail you out and more than justify their cost. I prefer to keep a backup set and not use them at all until needed. Of course the batteries still need to be checked and charged every so often and not left to sit for long periods uncharged.

Be sure to use the kind of batteries recommended for the type of solar garden light that you purchase. Most recommend NiCad but some will take either.

There is a difference between how NiCad and NiMH batteries are charged and it should be okay to charge NiMH batteries in any of these solar light chargers because they charge so slowly. These are basically “trickler chargers” and seem unlikely to be able to damage any battery.

Because of the extremely high capacity of NiMH batteries, it might take several days to fully charge them, depending upon light conditions. However, I haven’t tried it yet.

Another key point: Most of these lights (perhaps all of them) have a photo-sensitive switch to turn the light on and off at dusk and dawn. If you buy your solar garden lights just for producing light, it’s not a problem. But if you are going to use them as dedicated emergency chargers, you should avoid discharging the battery by disconnecting the bulb.

This is a simple way to make sure you can recharge small batteries.

To do the heavy lifting of recharging my heavy-duty 90-lb lead-acid batteries, I built two 65 watt solar panels out of cheap grade “B” solar cells, plywood and some acrylic sheeting. I used the design from the GreenDIYEnergy instructional videos.

Solar Energy Advantages and Disadvantages

Although solar energy has its disadvantages, they are vastly outweighed by its advantages. At least, they should be. It is relatively efficient, compared to other renewable energy, and it is certainly relatively cheap compared with them. Also, individuals are able to get solar power for their own property.

Why should you be interested in having solar panels installed though? We can cite two major reasons that you might be interested in doing that. From a pragmatic point of view there is the financial reason that you can save money on your energy bill by generating your own energy. It is the same sort of situation with solar panels, so the financial challenges have to be met before the environmental ones can be overcome.

At the moment, however, there are many challenges to be faced in terms of the solar power that we are using. First of all, it is not very efficient. That means that for all the energy that the solar panels could potentially be getting from the sun, much of it is being wasted. That is why research is always being done in to how to make solar cells more efficient.

As already stated, the issue of how expensive solar installations are is also an important one. Although the government cannot really just give people free solar panels, they are doing what they can to make buying them a better investment, and therefore more attractive to people. Although this does not solve the problem that many people still will not be able to afford the installation costs in order to take advantage of the Feed in Tariff scheme.

When these two problems of efficiency and expense have been solved, we will have come up with a solution to our energy concerns. That’s because solar panels are not only able to power our homes, but they are also able to power just about anything else because they can be put anywhere. There are prototype cars that are being powered with solar cells, for example. Even the energy that we need to travel could be acquired from the energy from the sun eventually, therefore.

The key to bringing about these changes, transitioning from non renewable energy to solar energy and other renewable forms, is individuals. If we start demanding more and more solar power, then companies will respond by creating more solar cells, and doing research into making them more efficient. There will also be competition between these companies, driving down the price and eventually making it affordable for everyone. This is how we will be able to avoid global warming without an economic collapse.

If someone told you that the future of the human race depended on our using more solar energy, you might think that they were crazy. If that were the case, then surely the politicians would be making more fuss about it, surely there would not be objections on aesthetic ground to sites being created, not if it is so important. At the moment our way of life is based on the fact that we are able to get cheap energy. That is, energy which is relatively cheap. If this cheap energy runs out before we have an alternative in place then the planet will no longer be able to sustain the population of the planet as it is. Unfortunately the cheap energy comes in the form of fossil fuels, non-renewable energy, meaning that it will run out. Before that happens it will become more expensive, and there are signs of that happening today. That is why we can say that renewable energy like solar power is actually so important.

If we want to avoid these problems, which will come from the non-renewable energy running out, then we have to transition to renewable energy like solar power. Of course this has not even mentioned the dangers that the effects of global warming can have, which can also be very serious. The way to combat this as well though is through the use of solar panels.

Two of the reasons that solar panels are so popular is that they are versatile and they are relatively efficient. Solar cells are scalable, so you can have huge ones that you put in a desert, and they work as a solar power plant. Then you have the small ones that can go on things like pocket calculators. But you also have what is perhaps their most useful size, the ones that can go on the roof of a house.

It might not seem as if you are making much of a difference on your own by getting solar panels for your roof. Actually though, you are exercising true democratic power, you are literally and figuratively taking the power for yourself and changing the world one little piece at a time. It is all any of us can do, and it is the only way that the world changes. Don’t think of yourself as being on your own though, you can connect to all of the other people that have done the same thing.

What we have been able to observe, however, is that when the government brought in the Feed in Tariff, which made solar panels a better investment, more people started buying them. You could take that to mean that people are greedy and only care about the money, or you could view it that they wanted to be able to get them but they were too expensive before.

Perhaps, however, you do not think that expense should come into it when we are talking about the survival of humanity. However it is not something we can afford to ignore, we just have to hope that solar power can be made even more efficient, powerful and cheap so that it can take over from fossil fuels as soon as possible.

The best thing about solar energy is probably that you have the opportunity to directly get involved in using it. You can stop being a part of the problem, reduce your carbon footprint, and make money at the same time when you get solar panels for your property.
