Understand Solar Panels and How They Work

Solar panels are considered to be a green form of energy. In today’s world they are a serious option to consider if you want to find a more sustainable energy source and help reduce both your carbon foot print and your energy bills.

Solar power generates energy from the sun simply by converting sunlight to electricity. This process is done with no moving parts, producing zero emissions, and with very little maintenance. Solar panels are constructed using a series of small and individual silicon cells that generate electricity from sunlight. This sunlight hits the surface of the solar panel and it has the effect to produce an electrical current on the surface of small silicon wafers.

Up to 12 volts of energy can be created from smaller solar panels. On average these smaller panels have an average of 36 solar cells in their construction. Using large solar panels with around 72 solar cells, you to produce up to 24 volts of energy.

Whether you use large or small solar panels they can be wired together to create a row or array of panels to increase the amount of energy you can harness from the suns rays. Combining these panels together gives you the added bonus of having a higher voltage output so you can use smaller wires to harness the electric power from the solar panel.

There is a range of different types of solar panels. A starting place is to look at Monocrystalline solar panels. These are most efficient type of solar panel you can get today, but they can be costly. This costs is represented by the solar cells make up of a very pure type of silicon and use a complicated process to grow the silicon crystals.

A type of solar panel is Polycrystalline. These are sometimes called Multi-crystalline solar panels and are made with Polycrystalline cells. This type of panel is less expensive and slightly less efficient than Monocrystalline cells. This is because the cells are not grown in a large block of many crystals.

The Amorphous solar panel is not made from crystals like other types of panel. These are metal or glass coated with a layer or silicon to create the solar panel. Amorphous solar panels are in the bracket of the cheaper type of panel, as they are less expensive than other types. This type of solar panel is less energy efficiency so more are needed to generate the same amount of energy as more expensive alternatives.

Solar panels can be a good investment to help you save money and save energy. There is an initial set up costs, which some may find expensive, but grants can help to offset this cost. Ultimately solar is a great solution to our energy needs and will help the environment and help reduce your energy bills.
