An Environmental Science Degree: An Investment In The Future

The world is changing faster now than at any time since the last ice-age 10,000 years ago and the major cause of that change is man. To allow the changes to continue unchecked is reckless at the least. Monitoring those changes and being able to convince others that we have to do or not do activities that affect the environment will take well qualified people with the relevant environmental science degree.

It has often been said that the education offered in colleges and universities are a direct response to the job market and the trends therein. If this is so then the future for professionals with an environmental science degree could not be much brighter.

After the industrial and the informational age, we are quickly entering the environmental age, where the environment and its characteristics are of paramount importance.

Never before, as a society, have we paid real attention to the environment and many would argue we still do not pay enough attention. Continuous exploitation of the earths natural resources and constant generation of heat and waste products have caused significant damage to the environment.

We live in an age where knowing, understanding and adapting to the environment is no longer a choice – it is the only way ahead. This age demands qualified professionals, especially those with professional environmental science degrees.

A number of allied degrees find their place alongside conventional environmental science degrees. Big business has, for a long time, been required to comply with safety and industrial security requirements. In industries like biotechnology, due to the nature of the products, there are numerous opportunities for disaster.

Disaster management and hazardous material management are fields of study that are very much in demand by today’s high technology industries. While often these studies are not comprehensive enough to be offered as science degrees by themselves, these courses are more often than not partnered with environmental science degrees as part of a package deal.

For the environmental science degree student, it can be an advantage. While pursuing their main course of study, they can get qualifications in a number of allied fields. This makes them thorough professionals and capable of entering a wide range of industries when they graduate with their environmental science degree.

As a result of the long-standing lobbying activities, the United States is home to some of the worlds largest and best funded environmental groups and many professionals, working for these groups, have environmental science degrees.

Jobs exist with government bodies, lobbying positions with political groups and corporate organizations, research positions with foundations and other research organizations. More opportunities exist in the environmental safety departments of leading oil majors and even faculty positions at colleges offering environmental science degrees. They all offer lucrative positions that professionals with an environmental science degree can hope to secure.

An environmental science degree does not deal with environmental topics alone. Due to the very nature of their work, professionals who acquire an environmental science degree need to be equipped with allied subjects like compliance, law, criminal justice, and public communication.

The courses of study that ultimately lead to a environmental science degree are varied and interesting. Someone with an environmental science degree is likely to be tasked with protecting our environment as a result we need the very best!

If you have a concern about the World we live in or a desire and determination to do something to improve a steadily deteriorating habitat, then an environmental science degree would be an excellent place to start.

Anyone aspiring to be an environmental professional would typically need to go in for a BS Environmental Science Degree before going for an MS or a PhD in Environmental Studies.

Environment science degrees are offered in all major colleges and universities across the United States and the Western World. An environmental science degree can be taken full-time, part-time or by distance learning so whatever your circumstances you can contribute.

Automotive Salvage And Environmental Safety

Environment awareness has increased around the world together with the necessity for better regulations that will allow automotive salvage become a safe environmental occupation. Under law enforcement, automakers should take care of their products from cradle to grave. Carmakers are subjects to great international pressure and urging that all dismantled car pieces, wrecks and carcasses should no longer pile up in waste metal yards, but be reused or recycled.

Is it just metal piling up in salvage yards, which has brought automotive salvage into the spot light? Only partially; as there remains the risk of chemical pollution and infestation due to all the vehicle fluids that pollute the soil, should there be any leakage. Those company owners that deal in car dismantling should follow some general basic environmental security rules when fragmenting cars to pieces.

The best way to minimize spill-over during automotive salvage operations is by evacuating fluids before dismantling and depositing these fluids to safe tanks or containers. Fluids should be immediately removed from all the constituents of the vehicle. If this were not possible, check for leaks, and in case you find any, isolate them and reduce the risk of contamination.

The fluids that result from dismantling automotive salvage should be kept in safe containers or tanks. These should be labeled and inspected on a regular basis in order to prevent alterations or leaks. In case they are deposited outside the salvage yard, they must be equipped with a double protection system from the external environment.

One great advantage that automotive salvage has is that it makes possible the reduction of the production price per component in big vehicle companies that can invest in recycling items or reconditioning them for reuse. Some automakers are also talking about increasing the number of recycling points, where automotive salvage might become the starting point for alternative building materials.

The question that has brought much heated debate is: “To whose expense?” Who pays for automotive salvage that is for dismantling, for reusing, for recycling? The answer to this may be the answer to a whole bunch of environment issues that originate in careless automotive salvage in junkyards.

Managing the automotive salvage yards would dramatically reduce the amount of scrap that fills the land. There are thousands of independent automotive salvage yards owners who need a efficient recycling system as they see the pile growing on their property, as not all of it can be sold or re-used without reconditioning.

Asbestos: A Deadly Environmental & Health Hazard

Asbestos is a term used for some naturally occurring minerals that form long thin fibers and fiber bundles on crystallization. Most commonly found group is the serpentine group that includes Chrysotile (white asbestos). It is also the most frequently mined form of Asbestos. Another very important asbestos group is known as the amphiboles, which includes Crocidolite (blue asbestos) and Amosite (brown asbestos). The asbestos fibers have high tensile strength, and chemical, electrical and heat resistance properties and so are extremely useful as a building/insulation material. Asbestos has been used extensively all over the world.

Asbestos: General Information

Although Asbestos is a hazardous material, it poses a health risk only if the Asbestos fibers become airborne and subsequently inhaled. Therefore, most Asbestos materials pose little health risk unless they are disturbed in a way that allows the fibers to be released into the atmosphere. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to serious diseases such as lung cancer, Mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the lungs or lower digestive tract) and asbestosis (a chronic fibrosis of the lungs).

Many industries used Asbestos extensively in the past, exposing their workers to this deadly materials. As a result, many new cases of Asbestos caused ailments are occurring now. However, the fact that Asbestos was also installed in many buildings means that a wider range of people still have the potential to be exposed – particularly building and maintenance workers. For this reason, the latest revision of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations introduces (from May 2004) a new responsibility on those responsible for non-domestic premises to manage the asbestos contained in them.

Asbestos Caused Diseases

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleural and peritoneal lining. It exclusively related to asbestos exposure. By the time it is diagnosed, it is usually fatal. Mesothelioma has a long latency period (time between exposure and onset of disease) of at least 15 years and sometimes as long as 60 years.

Asbestosis is a scarring of the lung tissue. This scarring impairs the elasticity of the lung and hampers its ability to exchange gases. This leads to inadequate oxygen intake to the blood. Asbestosis restricts breathing leading to decreased lung volume and increased resistance in the airways. It is a slowly progressive disease with a latency period of 15 to 30 years.

Lung Cancer is a malignant tumor of the bronchi covering. The tumor grows through surrounding tissue, invading and often obstructing air passages. Again, the disease has a long latency period of at least 20 years.

The victims of all these asbestos related diseases are eligible to file lawsuits for compensation against the persons and organizations responsible for causing asbestos exposure. They can take the help of mesothelioma and asbestos attorneys to fight their compensation claims.

Bamboo Flooring – A Sensible, Environmentally Friendly Alternative To Hardwood

There are many different flooring materials available today including one of the most beautiful and environmentally friendly, a bamboo floor. No, this isn’t taking round bamboo stalks and lashing them together to make a floor for your home. Bamboo flooring in one of the most durable and unique flooring materials you can get for your home today.

Many hardwood floors feature a nice grain and wood look that is very pretty especially in the various colors and patterns. Bamboo flooring however features a much more subtle graining pattern and because of the way it’s manufactured, features more of a pronounced ring like pattern. So you have a grain that suggests a direction and every so often a uniquely bamboo ring pattern. Bamboo can also be stained and finished just like regular hardwood flooring.

Bamboo is actually a grass like plant that grows quickly and is usually considered an aggressive plant. That is, it tends to grow rapidly, overwhelming many of the other plant life in it’s immediate area. This makes for a very sustainable resources as a full bamboo crop can be harvested in less than 7 years. This is a much better alternative to hardwood trees that can take upwards of over 20 plus years to mature.

Bamboo, traditionally thought of as an Asian but specifically Chinese plant has found a new home in products for the west. As bamboo has gained in popularity, many more people are protecting bamboo forest areas and are much more concerned about conservation. The growth of bamboo use for furniture, blinds, many home decor products, and bamboo flooring has created a robust economic incentive to grow natural products instead of clear cutting to make way for farming.

Bamboo flooring is comparable to hardwood floors in durability, looks, and installation. It has broad appeal and beauty that will not easily go out of style. Due to the interest in bamboo flooring, you can now find it in commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, offices and many high traffic areas.

Another great benefit of bamboo flooring is price. Due to the rapid growth rate, the cost of fully stained and sealed bamboo floor material can be found for less than half the cost of planked hardwood. Bamboo floor can be installed using any of the usual hardwood flooring installation methods. These include a floating floor where the floor is simply glued together to form a single piece, straight gluing to the old floor material and a basic nailing method.

If you’re looking for a uniquely beautiful flooring material that will provide years of ambiance and warmth to your home, look no farther than a high quality bamboo floor.

How Much Energy Do Solar Panels Produce

Many people are turning to various ways of collecting the sun’s radiation in order to save money and save the planet at the same time. But how much energy do solar panels produce is a good question because people want to know if it would be worth it to have them installed on their houses. Unfortunately, panels used to collect the solar rays from the sun only use a fraction of what is out there waiting to be collected and harnessed for energy.

Homeowners typically have more than one solar panel installation done at a time because the more panels a house has, the more energy they are able to save. A solar panel collects the suns rays and turns them into energy that the house could use to generate power for several different appliances such as the heating units, the air conditioning units and some of the other electrical powered appliances. In addition, the heat from the solar panels will help to keep a house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Technology in radiation and radon collection is not what it could be. What is collected through these panels is only a small part of what is passing through the earth’s atmosphere during the heat of the day. Many different factors are involved as determining how much of the solar energy each solar panel system will collect per day. Geographic issues, weather-related issues and the climate of the area where the house is sitting all play a role in the collection of the suns rays and the amount of the sun’s rays that are dispersed through the solar panels and then used throughout a house for energy purposes.

An aired climate is quite possible the best place for solar panels Canada because it will create more energy from the sunlight directly even on overcast days. Everyone knows that even on a cloudy day, the sun is still extremely hot and still producing its powerful rays so the solar powered panels will still be producing their energy at almost top levels.

It is a pretty simple procedure as to how a solar panel works. A solar panel is covered in many tiny separate cells which are conductors for collecting the sun’s rays as it is exposed to the sun outside on either a rooftop or specially designed panel. Each of these cells converts the sun into usable electricity, protons which strike at the surface of each solar panel and then the electrons are knocked into an orbit which releases the electromagnetic filed. The cells on the panels will pull these electrons that are freed in to a directional current and then the metal connections become the cell of electricity.

A measurement of solar isolation is the amount of how much each solar panel will receive on the surface. Naturally, the more solar energy a surface is exposed to, the more it can be converted into electricity and the more it will be able to help the planet and help the owners of the home save money. The use of alternative sources, especially solar panel insulations, is but only one way to gather the earth’s energy that is naturally free and roaming around the atmosphere to be harnessed for home consumption.

A homeowner could contract an alternative energy specialist to make sure they are getting the right solar powered panels for their needs. The customers are all different and so are their insulation needs, therefore the contractor chosen to do the jobs should be certified in alternative energy insulations. If they are part of an insulation association of alternative installers, all the better.

The question of just how much energy do solar panels produce for a homeowner is dependent on a couple of things. The answer is dependent on how much of the solar panel covers the room, geographical conditions and many other factors. However, solar panel insulations might be what a homeowner is looking for to help them lower their electric bill and help to save the planets resources in the process.

Solar panels Canada are becoming priority. It’s time for the world to invest in solar panels systems, we are all responsible for our carbon footprint and should be actively trying to live greener.

The Beauty In Recycling

Before you send it to the landfill, inspect it closely to see if it still has life. One can never be sure, with a little imagination and elbow grease it may very well become a thing of beauty. Heck, who knows, maybe you can even sell it.

When we think of art it may not be a chair that was saved from a landfill but I can tell you that I think that chair I saved is. Someday I’m going to show it to my neighbor and see if she recognizes it.

A very early form of green art was displayed in the woven designs of blankets and rugs. The Rya rug is one of my very favorites. It has a long history dating back to the 1700s in Finland. The Rya was traditionally used in weddings and months before the happy event, the weaver was summoned to the village to create the special rug. Some were created with a rendering of the happy couple on it, or the family crest. The couple knelt upon the rug to say their vows and then used the rug as a wall hanging in their home to remind them of their special day.

It’s unfortunate that in today’s world so many rugs are made with synthetic fabrics on electronic looms to supply the masses. But on the brighter side there are still artisans out there, that use wool died with naturally made dyes and weave them in the old way, on a hand operated loom. Expensive yes, but worth every penny. So next time you have a need for such an item, check out the naturally made products and save a little piece of the earth.

Back in the pioneer days some of the log cabins were built with sod on the roofs. Today the same strategy is used to help insulate the inside from the outside elements and if you plant vegetables up there you can feed the family. So you see nature does provide and we need to learn how to take advantage of its benefits.

Near Phoenix Arizona, is an entire community built with the sole purpose of protecting the environment while creating a pleasant, working and living space for people. It is solar and wind powered, with water reservoirs and multi-purpose buildings. Its residents are college students and experts on the environment and it is through their imaginations and know-how that Arcosanti came to life.

Before I go I want to make mention of one more quite interesting form of green art that I found. That is the masterpieces created by Mark Fischer. He has used his expertise in sound equipment to translate the sounds of aquatic animals into patterns that are not only beautiful but colorfully decorative pieces of art.

Well, I hope you take away some new ideas to enhance your own part of the world and please stop by my site and check out green art by Jamie. https://www.remembermesite.com

What Is A Nomad 27M Solar Panel Kit

The Nomad 27M solar panel is a convenient source of power made in mono-crystalline solar technology. This particular product uses 27 watts of electricity, and is rechargeable in all types of weather. When it’s sunny, it can take as little as four and half-hours to recharge fully. When partly sunny, it takes up to 7 hours and 15 hours in overcast weather. These times may vary depending on the battery you are using. For instance, the Sherpa 120 will take 10, 17 and 36 hours in sunny, partly sunny and overcast weather respectively. Others like Ranger 350 will take 31, 45 and 100 hours to recharge fully in the three different types of weather respectively. This is not a long time to wait considering there are no bills to pay for the recharge!

It is ideal for charging electronics and has eight small panels providing power, so you can use one at a time. One of the greatest attributes of the Nomad 27M solar panel is its size. It measures 22.5″ x 44.5″ x 0.03″ which drops to 10.5″ x 7″ x2″ when folded. Folding it makes storage easy. Homes where space is a problem will find it quite appropriate because when folded, you can easily store it in a drawer or case. It is also light in weight (3.4 lbs) and can be carried along when traveling, going on a hike or any other outdoor adventure. Simply attach whatever it is you need to charge on the solar panel, be it a phone or torch, fasten the panel on your backpack and keep walking!

Of course the biggest advantage of the Nomad 27M solar panel over the 13.5M panel is that the 27M produces a higher output, thereby making is more efficient. With that said, the 27M is also capable of storing energy for a greater length of time than the 13.5M version. Both models do however use the same 12V voltage for charging purposes, although the 27M utilizes an 18V open voltage circuit.

Nomad 27M solar panel comes with three support rods made of aluminum, which provide stability when charging. You can use them to hold the panel in place when charging outdoors. It also comes with four sturdy grommets, which enable you to hang the panel at different angles. If you are worried about the clutter connecting electronics often brings, then you don’t have to anymore. It has a built in pocket that holds the connector cord in place when charging your items. This prevents the danger of someone tripping over the cord and being injured. You can place it at a far corner or if there are children in the house, you can easily put it under a chair or under the bed.

The Nomad 27M solar panel is made from top quality material which is durable and hardwearing. This essentially means that once you’ve bought it, you’ll have for many, many years. The unit is also water resistant, so even if you leave it standing outside overnight, you don’t need to worry about it getting damaged if it rains. Rain and dew will have absolutely no affect on it at all, but if you know you won’t be using it for a while, then it is of course better to fold it up so that it can be safely stored away in the case provided.

Jordan Eske has been living eco friendly since 2008. And in 2009 he decided to help consumers go green too with solar power. The Nomad 27M Solar Panel is rising in popularity for adventurers.

Solar Panels And Green Technology

If you want to make lifestyle changes that will help save the environment then using solar power is something to consider. One of the most popular environment protection implementations and reliable energy source, solar power is becoming an energy option for all. If you have a neighbour using solar panels you may have learnt a bit about the benefits of solar power directly from a solar energy consumer. If not read on for a summary of ways in which solar power can help the environment:

It’s renewable – Unlike fossil fuels solar power is created from a renewable energy source, sunlight. This means that unlike coal and oil, there is no chance that this will ever be completely used up or inaccessible. By using sunlight to create energy there is no need for processes that damage the environment to capture (such as drilling or mining). This means it is a clean and very practical energy solution.

It offsets greenhouse gases – Solar power technology is brilliant in the sense that it can produce electricity without emitting CO2 into the environment. It has been calculated that by using solar technology for 20 years you would make a saving of an impressive 6 tonnes of CO2.

It can help save the environment anywhere – Solar power is simple in that it can be produced anywhere in the world during hours of sunshine. Once solar technology is installed energy can be produced anywhere it is needed and unlike wind farms using solar panels is unlikely to cause controversy as they are unobtrusive, compact and quiet too.

Although solar power is hugely beneficial there are still a couple of concerns that hold back home-owners from using it. These are the set-up costs and the initial manufacturing impact on environment. Whilst solar power is very energy efficient itself the manufacture of the solar panels can produce a lot of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. Unfortunately this is the case with many new technologies however manufacturers are working all the time to cut these down, along with price. As solar power becomes utilised further it will become cheaper and more energy efficient to produce too.
