Today there are real benefits in learning how to make a solar panel. Before you do anything, decide what part of your house or property you are going to attach the solar panels to, and how you will secure them in place. After you’ve sorted this out, and have obtained the necessary materials, you can get started with the construction process. Using a voltmeter to determine the completed unit’s output, it is easy to calculate how many will be needed to meet one’s electricity needs.
Theoretically it is feasible to build a basic unit for producing electricity using some very elementary materials. This kind is made from copper sheeting heated on a stove to form a cuprous oxide coating that generates electricity when placed in a jar filled with salt water. However you would need to have monumental amounts of copper sheeting to operate a single household appliance.

This type, made up of solar cells attached together into a unit, can either be built from kits available on the market, or from scratch after purchasing the parts. One way you can go is to place them on the ground, if you have enough space, and angle them to collect the most sun. Most people opt to place their solar cells on the roof of their house. Typically the cells will be mounted on a frame that will be angled according to the latitude of your dwelling. You can use a fixed mount or you can have a tracking device that keeps the panels turned towards the sun.
As far as backing goes, a plywood material works well for attaching the silicon PV cells. They may be bought whole from a distributor, or for maximum savings, broken cells will do the job and may be purchased inexpensively. When you have built your cells, cover them with a transparent sheet such as plexiglass so they are well protected. Aside from the plexiglass, you’ll also need protective varnish for the timber, silicone, wire, solder and a volt meter.
First cut your plyboard to the exact size to hold the PV cells. Coat the plywood with UV protector to shield it from sunlight. Then you have to join the PV cells together. Then solder all the connection tabs onto the backs of the solar cells. With the tabbing wire, connect the cells to one another from the front of one to the back of the other, connected in rows. Each row needs a wire connected to its back to transfer power to a battery.
The next step in the operation of how to make a solar panel is to attach the cells to the plyboard, with holes drilled in it to pass the wires to the battery. Then place the plexiglass over the plywood to seal in the cells and use silicone glue to seal any gaps or holes. Having said that, you will need to drill small holes next to the wires so that excess heat can’t build up within the panel. Connect a junction box to your storage battery and then connect all your wires from the panel to the junction box.
Use a voltmeter to quantify the production of the panel. The measurement of electrical output can be used to work out how many cells you’ll need to power all or part of your home.
