You ever see those large windmills out on the countryside or on television, then sit there and wonder how they work? The easiest way to explain it is that they have blades which are connected to a shaft. Once the shaft is able to turn the generator, then the power gets produced. Obviously it’s not as easy as it sounds, but we’ll help you understand it a little better.
The wind turbine is just a machine that uses rotation to convert the energy of the wind to a mechanical form of energy. When this type of energy is used directly by a machine to do tasks such as grinding or pumping, this machine is generally thought of as a windmill. But when this mechanical energy is changed to electricity, then this machine is thought of and either a WPU (wind power unit), wind generator, or a WEC (wind energy converter).
Now that the world has turned our technology up a notch, there are strong and more efficient wind turbines out there today. Take for example the HAWT system. This is short for a horizontal-axis wind turbine. They offer a rotor shaft and generator in the same location at the top of the tower. Then of course there are servo motors that have built in sensors to help make the blades rotate faster.
Because the towers create a certain amount of turbulence behind them, the turbines are pointing unwind from the tower. The blades of the turbines are made from sturdy material that is strong enough to keep them from them collapsing and hitting the tower in high winds. These blades are also installed at a good distance from the tower and in the front. They can be tilted upwards a bit in some circumstances.
If you don’t have access to a HAWT, then the vertical-axis version (VAWTs) will be used. These are set up so the rotor shaft is in a vertical position. The benefit around this option is that the turbines don’t have to be situated against the wind in order to be efficient. Most people utilize this option when the wind tends to come from various directions throughout the day.
The reason these can’t be setup on the high towers is because they’re difficult to mount. This is why you normally see these at the base of the tower.
When you see these towers, none of them are small. It is recommended that they be at least 100 feet high so they can get an increase in energy.
Wind turbines can be combine with solar power too. When trying to use renewable energies it is nice to know that you can combine both to reduce your energy costs. They are both equally eco-friendly too, neither of these give off carbon emissions.
