Every year when winter approaches my first thought is “How much will it cost to keep my house warm?” This year I have been thankful for a milder winter but with massive increases in the cost of energy I am still seeing expensive heating bills.

As the cost of heating our homes with fossil fuels continues to rise many of us are considering cost cutting answers. One easy solution is to switch to solar energy.

Solar energy is not only both beneficial to your wallet and the environment; it’s also practical and efficient.
The initial set up of switching to solar energy isn’t always cheap – but sunshine and the payback are worth it. When you add up the cost of heating your home, turning on the lights and cooking a long and lazy Sunday roast you soon realise how much energy you use – this in turn affects your bank balance. Reports have suggested that by switching to solar power to heat your water and your home you can save up to 70% on your bills, freeing up cash for something you’d prefer to spend your money on.
There are now also UK government and local authority grants that help make the set up affordable. These include ‘Feed-in-Tariffs’ which guarantee a minimum payment for the electricity generated by a solar panel system, as well as a separate payment for the electricity fed into the grid.

Apart from giving you more bang for your buck, solar energy has many environmental benefits.
Solar energy reduces air pollution. Yes that’s right. When fossil fuels are burned, particulate matter is released in the air. This can cause smoggy cities – solar energy does not cause air pollution.
CO2 (carbon dioxide) is produced when the fossil fuels are burnt. This is called a greenhouse gas. It is now believed that greenhouse gases are now affecting the climate and may be responsible for increased floods and hurricanes.
Another great thing about using sunshine is that it doesn’t run out – well according to scientists not for billions of years! Fossil fuels (coal, natural gas and oil) and limited and are also being used at a pretty inconceivable rate. As the demand for fossil fuels in developing countries also continues to rise it has become pretty clear that eventually it will run out.

There are also other benefits to solar energy. As well as saving you money and being green solar power is dependable and requires little or no maintenance. Photovoltaic (PV) cells that are used in solar energy systems are designed to provide energy for a long time and manufacturers of solar panels can give as much as 25-years warranty. This means you can rest easy once your panels are installed and won’t have to worry about upkeep costs or replacements. As your panels have been built to last you can just sit back and enjoy the benefits.

When beginning a solar energy DIY home conversions project, one question many people have before they start is: What will I need to complete the conversion?

Of course before you start with anything, you should get a good DIY solar guide, and you’ll be walked step by step through the process of setting up your solar energy solution. Aside from that though, let’s cover the basics of what you’ll need to go solar!

There are 7 main components you’ll need when wiring up a solar energy solution for your home. It should be noted here that we’re talking about converting a home, and not just creating portable solar energy solution (in which case you’ll only need 4 components).

Before you install your home energy solution, you’ll need the following components. These are listed in the order they will be wired into your solar energy system.

Solar Panels – In most DIY applications these will be built by you. You order discount photovoltaic cells, and assemble those into 50W, 75W, or 100W Panels.

Array DC Disconnect – This simple device is basically just a switch. It allows you to cut the DC power from your solar panels should system maintenance be required. If you shop around you’ll likely pay less than $25 for this component.

Charge Controller – Most home systems will be built with a battery backup. The charge controller ensures that a consistent amount of power is sent to the batteries, and that the batteries don’t discharge at night. Again, if you shop around for this component, it won’t be a large expense.

Deep Cycle Batteries – To store the power from your solar panels, you will need deep cycle batteries. If you find reconditioned batteries, these can be obtained for fairly cheap. Better yet, you can get old batteries for free and recondition them yourself.

System Meter – This component is actually optional, but it is suggested so that you have a clear way to see how much power is being fed into your home from the solar panels.

Converter – Since your solar panels produce DC power, and your home runs on AC power, the converter makes the solar energy usable by your home. A 1500W converter likely won’t cost you more than $50.

Backup Power – Most systems will also include some sort of backup power. In an off grid application this would generally be a generator. In a city or town, the power grid itself provides the backup.

From there the system gets wired into your home breaker box. At this stage, unless you are qualified, you might consider getting a qualified electrician to install the system. At any rate, you now have an idea of what will be needed to get your home running on solar energy.

If you haven’t done so yet, you should also consider downloading a copy of one of the top guides to teach solar panel DIY from our site. Doing so will ensure you have all of the information you need to get the conversion finished right, the first time!

Many people are interested in alternative energy these days but few understand much about the components that go into a renewable energy system. Solar panels collect energy from the sun and produce DC electrical current. The current that they produce is generally around 16 volts. Its 16 volts so that there are a few extra volts to charge the 12 volt batteries. If they only produced 12 volts and you were trying to charge the 12 volt battery, you wouldn’t be able to fully top off the battery charge.

As mentioned above, the solar panels are used to charge the 12 volt batteries. The 12 volt batteries are not of much use to us since our homes are powered on 120 volts of alternating current electricity. In order for us to be able to make use of the energy that the solar panels created we need to use a solar power inverter. A solar power invertor takes the 12 volt DC Power and steps it up to 120 volts AC Power.

There are several sizes of power inverters to choose from. It’s important that you choose one that is large enough for your needs. If the power invertor that you purchase is too small, not only won’t it power your electrical devices, it will be constantly working at its maximum capacity and this will cause it to prematurely fail.

Solar power inverters come in 12, 24, and 48 volt units. The reason for the higher voltage units is simple. Low voltage DC electricity is not very efficient at traveling through light gauge wires. If your batteries are very far from your solar panel, a lot of power is lost due to resistance in the wires. When using a 48 volt unit, your wire gauge can be smaller without as much electricity lost due to resistance.

Rv Freedom With Solar Power

If you RV, you undoubtedly like the freedom of cruising around where you will. Sooner or later, however, you have to find somewhere to plug in…or do you?

The beauty of RVing is you get to wander off the beaten path and explore interesting areas. That being said, nothing is worse than being in a beautiful area where there is no place to plug in. For many people, this means cranking on a generator that sucks down the fuel. Given fuel costs these days, that is becoming less and less a good option. In fact, many people are moving away from it entirely.

Technology seems to be invading just about every part of our life for better or for worse. In the case of portable solar panels, it for the better. Vast advancements have been made in solar panel design. No longer are they used solely for homes. Yep, you can now use them to power up your RV.

Portable solar panels for an RV are pretty much what you might think. They are just like the panels you see in peoples’ backyards or on their roofs. The primary difference is these are smaller, but still pack plenty of punch to meet your energy needs. Even better, one of the weaknesses of home solar panels does not exist with an RV. Solar panels produce DC electricity that has to be converted to AC for a home. Energy is lost in the process. Since an RV runs on DC, the problem is eliminated and you get more kick out of your panels.

A portable panel system can be very powerful. In fact, it can put as much power into your batteries as a gas or propane generator. Another advantage is your solar panel system will not make the noise of a generator. On the downside, it also does not produce energy at night, so you need to do some minor planning for your energy needs.

Using solar panels for an RV is a fairly simple process. You need between one and three of them. You can try to figure out your energy usage to determine the correct number, but it is easier to just ask the dealer. Anyway, you mount your panels on the roof. They fold down flat to the roof when you are driving. When you park, you should park in the sun and in a direction where the panels will get the maximum exposure. If you prefer to park in the shade, you can buy a portable system that you can move around on the ground. Make sure you have a long cord in case the sun is a b
1000
it off in the distance.

The energy from your solar panels should be able to keep your batteries charged so long as there is sun. The only issue you may run into is air conditioning. RV air conditioners suck the power down, so use it sparingly or turn on a generator.

The Solar Hot Water Heater – Why It Is Our Favorite Diy Solar Project For Beginners

If you are new to DIY solar power conversions the solar hot water heater is the very best place to start. We love the water heater as a first project for the following reasons. First, it is limited in scope, meaning that it has a very specific purpose which won’t overwhelm beginners. At the same time, the project teaches important solar concepts along the way.

It is also very inexpensive to complete and has a huge and immediate impact on your power bill. Most people don’t realize it, but heating water usually accounts for a full 1/3 of the average monthly energy expense. Only HVAC (air conditioning and heating) uses more energy in the average home.

You can usually build a solar hot water heater for under $100 – very impressive considering that a professionally installed system will cost well over $1000. The local home center or hardware store usually has all the parts you need. No special tools are needed. As long as you have a very basic understanding of plumbing connections, which most DIY’ers do, you’ll be on your way. It only takes a weekend to complete and you can be heating water for free on Monday morning.

People use solar water heaters in every part of the world, so the local climate is not an issue. The design technology has been around a lot of years and is very reliable. However, like with any solar component, it is recommended to have a backup source for long periods of cloudy weather. You will rarely need your backup because unlike some other solar applications, once the water is heated it stays pretty hot for quite a while.

Still, your sunlight and consumption may be different than mine so it is better to have backup and not need it than wish you did at some point down the road. Fortunately, your backup is already in place. You just keep your existing water heater and use it if/when you need it. Because the unit isn’t running on a regular basis it will last years longer than it would when being used every day.

By the way, your solar water heater will require very little regular maintenance and should actually last years longer than a conventional gas or electric water heater.

Much of the information on the internet about building solar water heaters is just plain wrong. I can tell you that the
1000
claims of being able to build one for $5 are false. These are usually held together by duct tape and wire or worse. If you are going to do this project, do it right and make sure you can produce enough hot water for your entire home.

The honest truth is you can spend less than $100 and save 33% on your monthly energy bill simply by converting your home to solar hot water.

Green Home Solar Power – Build A Solar Power Generator

Do you want to find out how to save money on your energy bills by harnessing renewable sources of electricity? By designing my own renewable energy generators, I have been able to save hundreds of dollars in savings each month while constantly helping to conserve the ecosystem at the same time.

Another thing is that many homeowners undergo the wrong perception that renewable energy solutions are very expensive and not worth investing in. The truth is that there is no need to spend more than $200 if you know where to locate the resources affordably and how to construct the systems the proper way. Harnessing environmental power can be inexpensive and fun when finished correctly.

1. What Are the Achievable Ways to Use Green Home Solar Power?

The 2 mainly feasible solutions that many homes, as well as my own, are using now to make limitless electricity are solar panels and wind turbine systems. You should first do a simple analysis of your house’s surrounding conditions and your home electric requirements sooner than deciding on your own choice. The next thing that you need to decide on is where to place your solar panel or wind mill to make best use of its effectiveness.

The step by step manual that I downloaded provides me with all the skills I need to identify the finest locations to place my energy systems. Solar and Wind powered systems each have their own advantages and drawbacks, and the decision really lies with the conditions surrounding your house.

2. How Do You Use Green Home Solar Power to Churn Out Electricity at Home?

Instead of buying one at retail price costing thousands of dollars like some rich families would do, it’s entirely possible to build one yourself for less than $200. It is less expensive, thus making it a more obtainable investment and the overall costs can be recovered quicker.

The energy crunch is a real worldwide crisis as fossil fuel supplies decrease and populations increase. Utility costs are going up in pace with the increasing demand for electricity. It’s no wonder that the alternative energy arena is a quickly growing market with millions of dollars invested every year. And of these great clean renewable energy sources, solar wind power show the most promise.

What is really exciting is the realization of the incredibly high level of abundance of energy that is radiated by the sun. The amount is actually quite unfathomable. Studies have shown that the amount of energy received from the earth by the sun in just one hour is enough to satisfy the entire world’s electricity demand for an entire year! It really puts in perspective the grandeur of this almost endless source of energy.

When you think about it, the sun is really the source of all life on the planet as well as the driving force for all the weather patterns on earth. It is also the driving force behind every web of life and all of the earth’s cycles. This leads us to the other nearly endless abundant source of energy: Wind.

As long as the earth spins on its axis and the sun radiates upon it, weather patterns and the winds that are produced will always occur. Weather patterns consist of the complex and often chaotic relationship between water, the sun’s energy, and the cooling and heating of air masses throughout the atmosphere. It’s a constant interaction and clashing of cool (low pressure) air masses and hot (high pressure) air masses with water molecules usually in vapor or condensed states. It’s a very complex dance, but the result in many parts of the world is constant wind. One of the many places where winds blow constantly is the Great Plains region of North America, from northern Texas all the way to Canada.

Constant winds and the very simple yet efficient technology of wind turbines lead to a very clean and renewable source of electricity. Once again, the abundance of the source of energy is so great that it is difficult to put it in perspective. A study by Stanford University in 2005 showed that there is enough wind energy worldwide to satisfy 7 times the global demand. And that’s if only 20% of all the wind is captured!

So why is it that the human beings on the planet have not collectively headed toward usingefficient technology of wind turbines to meet global demands on a large scale and fully replace fossil fuels? Why haven’t large energy corporations and all governments invested trillions in wind and solar power by now? We all have a pretty good idea why, but that’s a whole other article. The purpose of this article is to inspire a call to action for solar and wind power, and to inform the reader that the revolution toward renewable energy starts with you the individual! How you may ask? By making your own do it yourself solar wind power.

Making your own do it yourself solar wind power is totally double today and without having to spend too much money. Home solar power systems these days can run between $20 and $50 thousand depending on capacity. But there is a resource where you can learn how to make your own photovoltaic panels and your own wind turbines for under $200. If you are interested or inspired to supplement your electricity and cut down costs, you have to check out Michael Harvey’s do it yourself energy manual. Remember the massive abundance of these energy sources, and you’ll be inspired to help yourself and the earth as well.

In this modern era with global warming and green house gases on the rise, it’s important that one takes note of the importance of renewable energy resources to reduce carbon emissions and further harmful effects upon the environment. What could be a better way to do this than to start with your own home?

Governments around the world are offering grants, tax breaks, and concessions to those who are willing to convert their homes to use solar power. But sometimes it’s hard to find what’s currently being offered and how to get them. The best place to start is the “Database of State Incentives for Renewable and Efficiency” website. The site provides a map of the United States which allows you to click on the state in which you live, and a host of further links will be presented that will outline the incentives or grants that are being offered at individual state levels, as well as the federal level. Before you start the renovation or implementation of a solar power system, check out this site first. It will show you what you’re entitled to and what money you can save. This is the first step to understanding how to get a solar power grant.

Some of the issues that will be presented will be:

The policy or incentive type, whether it be a tax credit, net metering, or similar program. What sectors are entitled to the benefits, whether it is residential, government or commercial premises. A summary of the grant or incentive. Who is actually offering the grant (state or federal) A link to the website in charge of the offering of the grant or incentive. For what purpose the grant is being offered for, whether it is for the installation of solar power, wind energy, insulation, etc.

Both state and federal governments offer grants, and hopefully this article will point you in the right direction so you can receive them. The benefits can be quite numerous, with the possibility of receiving thousands of dollars or the complete purchase and installation price of renewable energy sources. Both state and federal governments are constantly increasing their offerings to encourage people to go green in order to reduce carbon emissions across the nation.

I encourage you to visit my Solar Power Grants website for further information and resources.

It is a well known fact that wind and solar power are alternatives means of energy. People understand that these two forms of energies can be utilized in generating electricity that will power our homes. Before, people only acknowledge the fact that the sun is just the alternative means but nowadays, people recognize that wind too can provide and can be a source of energy. This is why a number of households resort to both wind and solar power as options to the electricity which they get from utility companies.

With the continuous advancement in technology also comes the availability and accessibility of wind and solar power to be utilized in powering homes and households. The methods or ways on how these energies can be generated as well have improved and developed a lot that it makes the process of wind and solar power generation reliable.

Wind and Solar power comes with its advantages and disadvantages. However, there are more reasons to actually resort to this forms of renewable energy than not to get them at all. Some of the disadvantages include the fact that solar cells or panels can be quite costly and that wind and solar power can’t be stable when the source of energy is not there – meaning if the sun is not shining or if the wind is not blowing.

The advantageous are truly beneficial. One good advantage is the fact that this type of energy is unlimited meaning the sun will always shine every day just the same as the wind will continue to blow. Thus, source will always be available and it will not deplete. Another good reason to resort to wind and solar power is the fact that it does not harm the environment. These forms of energy do not cause any pollution and thus are means of energy which are environmental friendly and help preserve the planet. Wind turbines are very inexpensive and simple to build and solar panels do not require much maintenance. A good thing too is that excess power that you are able to store can then be sold to suppliers of electricity.

As you can see, the benefits that come with wind and solar power truly outweigh the disadvantages. What it ultimately means to you is that you no longer will have to do with monthly bills on electricity with is very costly. This translates to hundreds of dollars worth of savings in months and thousands in a year.

For more information about Wind and Solar Power, check the website below.

Liz Ays writes for http://www.liveoffgrid.org

What is the current percent of use of Green Solar homes?

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% “off of the grid and are completely self sufficient”

The house is built utilizing natures natural elements, in the shape of an octagon with 8ft wide arch doors on every wall to catch every angle of wind (typical 4 sided homes have half the chance as one with 8 sides. A circle being the most efficient design). Woodburning stoves, solar chimney, solar AC, solar heating, solar water heating (pool and home), solar stove, solar power, wind power, hydrogen powered back up generator, hydrogen back up water heater, hydrogen stove, 2 hydrogen powered trucks, 1 EV (electric vehicle) and satellite internet.

We also built many green small cabins on the ranch that we offer to family, friends and our on-site off-grid workshop guests, including one straw bale, one papercrete, earth bag and adobe, one cob and cordwood, one underground and rammed earth, one log and post and beam and one rock. Each one actually started as a test for what the main house would be and were later finished and turned into guest cabins. I later wrote a guide on how to build with alternative materials using alternative methods for next to nothing.

We raise meat and milk goats, chickens for meat and eggs, ducks for meat and eggs, trap havilina (wild boar pig), rabbit, quail. brew our own beer from home grown products, preserve our fruits, vegetables, etc. smoke and jerky the meat, make our own soap, cheese.

There are no utility lines, no water lines, no roads, tv, cell service, etc. on our ranch. EVERYTHING needed is produced here. All electricity comes from 27 solar panels, 2 main wind gens and a back hydrogen generator if needed (typically we can last 9 days with all luxuries of sunless windless weather, hasn't happened yet). Water is caught and storaged from the rain. Hot water is made with solar batch water heaters with an on-demand hydrogen hot water heater as backup. Even our vehicles use alternative energy (2 hydrogen trucks, 1 EV electric vehicle converted). Because of this we have no bills, no debt and no mortgage.

Anyone interested can check it out at..

www agua-luna com

I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

my home has all the comforts listed above plus some. we live very comfortable without effecting the environment. just saying that tol et you know it's possible. you may not want to go as extreme as me and my family but anywhere in between is something.

Without getting to in depth here, Using alternative fuels in your vehicles and harnessing your own electricity from the sun, water, earth and wind are the 2 are key elements in making a green transition and erasing your carbon footprint.

here's a calculator to find out how much of a green impact your making (carbon footprint)

http://www.conservation.org/act/live_gre…

if you'd like to make your next step feel free to contact me personally at www agua-luna com

I've been installing home made Solar panels. Solar stoves, Solar batch and inline hot water heaters. Solar radiant heating. Solar home heating and AC, along with home made wind gens and other alternative energy items for the last 3 years.

You can even make the above projects on site with simple parts from the local hardware stores or auto stores or junk yards. For more info check out some guides I wrote / compiled on how to DIY www agua-luna com

Again these projects can be accomplished anywhere by anyone.

if you absolutely can't do anything in your home at least you can put alternative fuels in your car. most major automotive manufacturers (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, etc) recommend the use of bio fuels, and nearly every car manufacturer in the world approves ethanol blends in their warranty coverage.

In fact your probably even driving an ethanol car and didn't even know it.

The trick is finding fuel.

I've been producing biofuel for about 3 years now, it's not extremely difficult. Basically you need general household ingredients, a processor (or still for ethanol) and some used oil. Blend it, let separate, screen and use. I complied a guide a while back to help walk you threw the process step by step, just email me or check out..

www agua-luna com

as for recyling the best way i've found without taking money from your won pocket is to join a free freecycle group in your area or visit the habitat for humanity.

If you’d like help in making your self sufficient steps, feel free to contact me directly. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com
on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others “help the environment”.

Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if you’d like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, I’m willing to walk you step by step threw the process. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com on the subject.
Solar Energy Pros And Cons

Have you been thinking about changing your power source over to renewable energy? I have also listed some of the Solar Energy Cons. A person can’t sincerely arrive at an honest conclusion without acknowledging the advantages and minuses. You should check into every aspect of changing over before approaching to your ultimate conclusion. There are more Pros that are not listed here that may or will not be essential to you depending upon your stance regarding the environment.

Solar Energy Pros

* Solar energy is a renewable resource. It doesn’t induce pollution while you generate it.
* Sunlight, unlike fossil fuels is all over, all though it is not evenly dispensed throughout the world. Solar energy can be made anywhere, even when there are no local utility supplier, therefore you are able to have power in inaccessible areas.
* With the correct resources, the components necessary to construct a solar system can be bought or produced rather inexpensively
* The nicest matter about solar power is that it’s costless to all.
* The engineering in use to implement solar radiation as energy to get electricity, heat, and mechanical power currently exists
* Solar systems possess no moving elements and can last numerous years.
* You don’t require fuel to be delivered to your home, and you will never run out.
* Granted the correct data, it’s almost always possible to forecast the amount of power a solar energy system will give.
* The systems are silent and becoming more and more unnoticeable.
* You will be able to qualify for financial incentives from the government to assist with paying for your system and also get tax breaks while it is in use.
* Using solar energy means one less home burning fossil fuels, and reduces the creation of greenhouse gas.

Solar Energy Cons

I’ve listed the Cons for using Solar Energy as well. Although there aren’t many disadvantages, they should still be weighed in.

* If you don’t know where to get the components at a discount, the original costs can be kind of high.
* Solar panels can require a lot of space. That’s why the roof is the optimal location for them to be set up.
* You can’t generate solar energy at nighttime, so you need a way to store it. Batteries are a good energy storage choice. With the right information, you can purch
1000
ase batteries for as low a $10 apiece or even free!
* Bad weather conditions can impact the amount of energy generated.

As you can see the Solar Energy Pros overbalance the Solar Energy Cons. If you are worried about the environment and you also acknowledge the income saving potential of using solar power, then this can be a good path for you to choose. I think that someday in our lifetime, solar power will become a more popular choice. By harnessing the power of sunshine, the Earth could change for the better one home at a time. Besides, our grandchildren will appreciate it.

Buying green: solar panels, hybrids, wind turbines.

Is the government trying to scare people into buying green by saying that global warming is around? If so, is it just for money for themselves?
